Ia lahir di Bodas Karangjati, Purbalingga, Jawa Tengah, 24 Januari 1916 dan meninggal di Magelang, Jawa Tengah, 29 Januari 1950 pada umur 34 tahun karena TBC dan dimakamkan di Taman Makam Pahlawan di Kusuma Negara yang semaki, Yogyakarta. .

Jenderal Soedirman lahir dan besar dalam keluarga sederhana. Ayahnya, KARSID Kartowirodji, adalah seorang pekerja di Pabrik Gula Kalibagor, Banyumas, dan ibunya, Siyem, keturunan Wedana Apex. Soedirman sejak usia 8 bulan diangkat sebagai anak oleh R. Tjokrosoenaryo, seorang pembantu Camat Rembang yang masih saudara dari Siyem. Jenderal Sudirman memperoleh pendidikan formal dari Sekolah Taman Siswa. Kemudian ia melanjutkan ke HIK (guru sekolah), Muhammadiyah Surakarta tetapi tidak sampai akhir. Soedirman juga aktif pada saat organisasi Pramuka Hizbul Wathan. Setelah itu ia menjadi guru di sekolahnya di Muhammadiyah Cilacap.

Ilmu yang didapat dari militer Jepang melalui pendidikan. Setelah menyelesaikan pendidikannya di MAP, ia menjadi komandan batalyon di Kroya, Jawa Tengah. Kemudian ia menjadi Panglima Divisi V/Banyumas setelah TKR terbentuk, dan akhirnya terpilih menjadi Panglima Angkatan Bersenjata Republik Indonesia (Panglima TKR). Soedirman dikenal memiliki pendirian yang teguh pada prinsip dan keyakinan, ia selalu mendahulukan kepentingan banyak orang dan bangsa di atas kepentingan pribadi, bahkan kepentingan kesehatannya sendiri. Kepribadiannya tertulis dalam sebuah buku karya Tjokropranolo, pengawal semasa gerilya, sebagai sosok yang selalu konsisten dan konsisten dalam membela kepentingan tanah air, bangsa dan negara.
